CompuBook is a hardware and software package developed by Media & Information Consultant, a division of SPW, to automate off-track-betting shops. Each system is customized to fit specific requirements of the user. The first version was installed in 1990 at Federal Bookmakers, Ltd. of Bridgetown, Barbados. A new version of the system is now running in Federal’s three shops around Barbados.
The largest CompuBook system to date, with more than 30 ticket terminals was installed in 1995 at Fair Chance Racing Service in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. Other systems are in operation in Guyana and Bermuda.
In a manually operated OTB shop, tellers write tickets by hand, and winning tickets are identified by manual inspection. Winning bets are calculated manually and cashiers pay tickets using the pay-off information provided my management. Risk management, control functions, and management information are all dependent on costly and time-consuming manual management intervention.
CompuBook automates all these functions while improving productivity and control. Races can be paid seconds after prices have been posted, allowing a faster churn. In addition, automated closing of races prevents past posting. The computerized control of all tickets, bets and teller balances offers exceptional management control of cash transactions.
CompuBook is designed to run on a configuration of networked PC’s. One server acts as a host for each cluster of up to twenty-five ticket/cashier terminals. The current version of the software runs under Windows NT and allows the networking of any number of OTB outlets and free standing betting terminals.
